Welcome to the Addiction Nurses Branch page of Te Ao Māramatanga website. The branch was established in 2018 by founding members Dr Daryle Deering, Louise Leonard, Michelle Fowler, Moira Gilmour and Steph Anderson.

All had been active members of Drug and Alcohol Nurses of Australasia Inc. (DANA) for a number of years and knew the benefits of having a nursing professional body, able to ‘be the voice’ on addiction related issues, advocate for those whose lives are impacted by mental health and addiction and support addiction nursing professional development.

They believed it was time that an Aotearoa – centric professional body was formed to enable the development of stronger partnerships with Māori and be responsive to addiction-related issues arising in the NZ context.

For these reasons Te Ao Māramatanga was then a perfect fit. Nevertheless, they strongly acknowledged that through links with DANA, they had met many wonderful and inspirational drug and alcohol nurses over the years, thanked them for their awhi and were keen to ensure that a collaborative relationship continued.

The branch was officially launched on 13th July 2018 at the College planning hui hosted by Hineroa Hakiaha in Auckland. For further details from the inaugural chair Louise Leonard and the College President see:

Our purpose is:

• Promote Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in our addiction nursing work
• To actively promote a role for nurses to respond to alcohol and other drug (AOD) related issues
• Provide a forum to mentor and grow a network of nurses interested in AOD issues
• Promote professional development opportunities and education
• Be the voice for addiction nurses on addiction related issues
• Advocate for those whose lives are impacted by mental health and addiction related issues
